Sugar Cookies

Updated: Dec 4, 2018

This sugar cookie recipe is the best I have found so far! Not only because the hint of orange in them will keep you coming back for seconds but because they actually keep their shape once they are baked.

This recipe was introduced to me when I married into the Taylor family. On one of my first halloweens my mother-in-law made them in pumpkin form with cream cheese frosting and candy corns on top. I've been hooked ever since.

It's only been recently though that I discovered how easy this recipe really is! For some reason I have always been intimidates by these cookies, but two years ago when my mother-on-law was gone I decided to make them myself. I am so glad I did. They're really quite simple to make.

One of the highlights about these sugar cookies is that the dough can be kept in the refrigerator for two weeks so you can pull it out, roll them out and cook a few over the course of a couple of weeks. Or, if you're going to a large party or family event than make them all at once, bring the frosting and decorations and let the kids have a blast individualizing them!

Christmas Sugar Cookies

They're shown above as Christmas cookies but be creative, pull out Easter egg and bunny cookie cutters for Easter or your leafs, pumpkins & turkeys for fall, halloween or thanksgiving. Got a heart cookie cutter? These make great valentine gifts for friends. Four leaf clover? St. Patricks Day ... you get the point!

Sugar Cookies

- 2 cups butter, softened to room temperature

- 2 1/4 cups sugar

- 3 eggs

- 1/4 cup milk

- 1 Tbsp. vanilla

- 6 cups flour

- 4 1/2 tsp. baking powder

- 1/2 tsp. Salt

- The zest off of one large orange

1. Preheat oven to 375.

2. In a large mixing bowl cream together the butter and sugar until well combined and smooth.

3. Add the beaten eggs, milk and vanilla and mix until combined.

4. Add flour, baking powder, salt and orange zest and mix until dough is formed.

5. Chill for 10-20 minutes so dough will be easier to roll out.

6. Spread a small amount of flour onto a clean counter top and roll the dough out until consistently flat and cut out shapes with desired cookie cutters.

7.. Bake for 5 1/2 - 6 minutes. Do not over bake.

Cream Cheese Frosting

- 8 oz cream cheese

- 1 stick real butter

- 1 tsp. vanilla

- 1 tsp. milk

- 4 + cups powdered sugar

- In large mixer cream together cream cheese, butter, milk and vanilla. Add powdered sugar and continue mixing.

* The fun thing you can do with this frosting is play with it. Do you want a thicker frosting that can be piled up high? Add more powdered sugar. Do you want a slightly runnier frosting that will run off the sides of your sugar cookies and leave them looking glossy and smooth? Add a little more milk. Play with those two ingredients until you reach your desired consistency.

- Finally, top with any and all fun and colorful toppings!
